Boyle Bugle Highlights - 5/8/2023

BOYLE BUGLE/Week of May 1 

 

MAJORS 


Giants 7, Red Sox 4 — Reid Holbrook had two hits and an RBI, scored two runs and tossed two scoreless innings to lead the Giants, who also received a two-hit, one RBI day from Luke Kneafsey. Rory Murphy hit a two-run single and threw two innings to close out the game, while Griffin Newby reached base three times and didn’t allow an earned run in two innings. For the Red Sox, Luke Hamer fired 2 1/3 hitless innings on the mound, and Tianu Koss hurled three innings of one-run ball. Boden Medow had two hits, including a double. 

A’s 4, Mariners 2 — Cal Byrne and Jack Payne combined on the mound to strike out eight and only surrender one hit for the A’s. The A's scored all four runs in the third inning — receiving RBI hits from Payne and Philip Walker. Byrne started the inning with a leadoff triple. 

Oscar Karlen got the start for the Mariners, going 2 innings and striking out 5.  

Tigers 4, Pirates 3 — The Tigers scored three in the top of the sixth, riding a key triple from Ethan Cann and double from Erickson Kenyon, and Declan Lam scored the go-ahead run. Cann then shut the door in the bottom of the sixth for the winners. For the Tigers, Cedra Crews and Charlie Davies combined for three shutout innings, as did Niki Welter and Noah Schick of the Pirates. Ciaran McDonnell hit a double for the Bucs. 

White Sox 8, Yankees 7 — Miller Weir and Carleton Hackett each hit RBI singles in a big eight-run 2nd inning. Weir pitched three innings, allowing just one earned run on three hits with no walks and seven strikeouts. August Gottleib cracked a two-run double to help the Yankees close the gap in the 5th inning. Chance Donahue and Trip Goldmacher were aggressive on the base paths, each scoring twice.

Giants 7, A’s 4 — Remi Thill threw two shutout innings and reached base four times, and Reid Holbrook tossed two frames and added two hits and an RBI for the Giants. Ty Wallace had two hits for the winners, Jacob DiPippa smacked an RBI single, and Ben Gulash and Rory Murphy each scored two runs, while Murphy closed it out on the mound. For the A’s, Cal Byrne twirled 2 and 2/3 shutout innings without allowing a hit, and Fisher Peck had two hits and two runs scored.

Red Sox 10, Yankees 8 — Luke Hamer smashed a three-run home run over the left field fence and Cole Swift had a double and two RBIs for the Red Sox. For the Yankees, Ty Cerne stroked a double and drove in a pair, and pitched four scoreless innings with six strikeouts. 

Tigers 3, White Sox 2 — Forrest Slavin delivered a key two-run single, Nolan Hansel hit a double and Ethan Cann closed out a tight game by striking out the side for the Tigers. The White Sox built an early 1-0 lead on singles from Beckett Glynn and Teddy Klassen.

MINORS 

Giants 14, SMCLL 2 — Quinn Kelly hit two home runs — giving the slugger four for the season — and teammates Ronan Coyne and Mikey Peavy each added over-the-fence taters as well for the Giants. Every player on the Giants had a hit in the romp.

Cubs 19, TPLL 4 — Cubs pitching only issued one walk, while Cubs hitters drew 16 walks in the win. Bret Griemsman was 3-for-3 with six RBI and Liam Connell hit a bases-clearing double. 

Phillies 8, Rangers 7 — River Jacobs hit a game tying RBI single in the 5th and then stole second, third and home for the go ahead score. Max Vreede hit two triples and pitched well in two innings. Liam Koss pitched two solid innings and had a hit. Luca Gaetani had an RBI single. 

Rangers 4, TPLL 2 — Finn O’Connell scored in the second inning on a Jackson Milum single and drew a bases-loaded walk to force in the winning run.  Archie Byrne, Fletcher Lucanic and Matt Cao combined to pitch five straight scoreless innings. 

Cubs 4, Phillies 3 — Cubs hurlers Liam Connell, Ricky Ames and Henry Ellis combined to strike out 13 and only walk one, and Ames added a key RBI double in the close battle. For the Phillies, James Read struck out five in two innings, and Liam Koss fanned four in his two. 

 

 

MINORS AAA 

Royals 8, Mets 6 —In a battle of top teams, Ezra Pope-Meyer, Cody Chittenden and Knox Medow combined on the mound for the Royals. Chittenden went 3-for-3 and both Pope-Meyer and Rivington Lee each had two hits. Tyler Feduska pitched well for the Mets and bashed an inside-the-park home run.  Ryder Glynn and Grayson Cerne had hits for the Mets.

Royals 9, A’s 0 — Rivington Lee, Knox Medow and Cody Chittenden combined on a shutout for the Royals. Ezra Pope-Meyer went 3-3 with three RBIs, Chittenden also had three hits and Knox Medow had a hit and score three runs. Nolan Corwin made a diving catch for the Royals to rob a shot off the bat of Lazlo Winn. Winn pitched an inning and Austin Coleman had two hits for the A’s.
