Return to Play: If the player has missed more than seven continuous days (e.g., Monday – Sunday) of participation for an illness or injury (whether it is related to baseball or not), a physician or other accredited medical provider must give written permission for a return to full baseball activity.
Injuries/Illnesses During a Game: If a player must leave a game for injury or illness, the player cannot return until cleared by a medical professional present at the game site.
Concussion: If a medical professional, Umpire in Chief, the player’s coach, the player’s manager, or the player’s parent has determined a player sustained a possible concussion, the player must be, at a minimum, removed from the game and/or practice for the remainder of that day (LLI, Regulation II, Note 3). In California, youth sports organizations must immediately remove athletes suspected of having a concussion and prevent their return to play for the remainder of the day, requiring a licensed healthcare provider's written clearance and a graduated return-to-play protocol of at least seven days.
Sudden Cardiac Arrest: In California, we are required to remove a player who passes out or faints while participating in an athletic activity. The removed player cannot return to athletic activity until evaluation and cleared to return in writing by a physician or surgeon, a nurse practitioner, or physician assistant.
LLI’s Returning to Play After Injury provides more information regarding the above.
